California Dreaming

California Dreaming

Last in my current series of Americans Abroad. This time of an old beautifully restored 1950's Red Chevrolet Pick Up (or bakkie as we call them in South Africa). This was taken last summer in St Leonard's down a back street I decided to explore, very happy to have found this.

Safe House

Safe House

The journey continues with my Americans Abroad project (an off shoot of my Exploring the Automobile series). This car (I believe its an Oldsmobile - will stand corrected) was photographed in St Leonards. The scene made me think of an episode of the Sopranos or similar. I love scenes like this when I come across them, and in fact get quite excited, as I find it so surreal and love the sense of Americana it evokes here in the UK.

Striped Tomato

Striped Tomato

Continuing my Americans Abroad theme, this time of a replica  of the infamous Ford Gran Torino from Starsky and Hutch, which was affectionately known as the "Striped Tomato".  As a kid growing up, this was one of the cars we used to dream about, and was as much a leading character of the hit TV show as were the main stars Starsky, Hutch and Huggy Bear.

Latest photography posted on my Flickr Photo Stream Night-time view of a restored customised VW Kombi (Combi) that is local to Eastbourne. It can be tricky shooting cars at night, especially when the best angle is on the other-side of a busy rat run cut through, and you have to allow for 30 odd second exposures,  and often have the risk of a light trail running through the shot.  On this occasion the combination of low angle for the composition and the happy occurrence of a passing car across the shot led to this pleasing combination of effect, composition and subject matter.

Sixth in my Hasting Fishing Beach series. Very pleased with some the comments people have made in response to this image, makes it all worthwhile to me, some extracts below:

"The light in your photos is always perfect ... " from Delaville

"Love that light! Fantastic items to shoot, what a collection. Wonderful clarity too, I think the sharpness adds an extra punch to an already great photo ..." from John

Hastings Herring Fair

Fourth in my Hastings Fishing beach series. This time of the sheds where the fishing tackle and nets ect is kept. For this image, I also tried something different, inspired by my friend and fellow photographer Paul Manser was doing initially, and that was using his Canon Speedlite to illuminate a scene. For this photograph I used my LED torch which I always carry in my camera bag, to illuminate  the poster of the "Hastings Herring Festival

Save the Lollipop Man Appeal

Latest photography posted on my Ipernity Photo Stream

Photograph I took a while ago (3 years ago), blurb as follows from when it was taken:

"Parents with children at the Stafford County Junior, and Roseland’s Infant School are currently running an appeal to raise £3000 to retain the services of David the lollipop man, whose funding has not been renewed. The reason for this is apparently that the busy road St Phillips Ave that he mediates for parents and children crossing, apparently does not warrant a dedicated crossing guard. However a number of us are extremely concerned that by David not being there at the busy school open and close times, and the heavy volume traffic at this time, will lead to a serious accident. As a result the Stafford PTFA is running an appeal to raise the £3000 per annum required to pay David a part time salary."

He is still there 3 years later :)

Retro Styling

Continuing my current motorcycle theme. This time of a retro Japanese motorcycle from the late seventies, early eighties. I think it may be a Kawasaki. This photograph was taken in Eastbourne last summer.
