Recent Commission for Eastbourne's Phoenix Choir

A selection of my photographs from a recent commission for the Eastbourne based "Phoenix Choir" of their performance of J.S. Bach "Passion of St Matthew" which was performed here in Eastbourne a couple of weeks ago at Church of England "All Saints" . What a wonderful and magical experience to be a part of. I was challenged in parts of the church by very poor lighting in areas and had to work hard to capture the soloists who were predominantly in this poor area of light and had to really push my skills and equipment to the edge, however this all paid off in the end in the results that I managed to obtain.

Receiving the following comment from my client was lovely  "Many thanks for the pics - they really convey the atmosphere on the night which I think is great and almost palpable."

Link to the review of their performance on the Eastbourne Herald newspaper website featuring one of my photographs.

Latest photography posted on my Flickr Photo Stream Night-time view of a restored customised VW Kombi (Combi) that is local to Eastbourne. It can be tricky shooting cars at night, especially when the best angle is on the other-side of a busy rat run cut through, and you have to allow for 30 odd second exposures,  and often have the risk of a light trail running through the shot.  On this occasion the combination of low angle for the composition and the happy occurrence of a passing car across the shot led to this pleasing combination of effect, composition and subject matter.

Minas Morgul version 2

The seventh in my Birmingham night time series. For this shot, I found myself on top of a near deserted parking  garage just behind the library. It was a very atmospheric winter night, with mist and frog, I was drawn to the BT Tower in the  near distance, and loved the red lights on top with their ghostly impressions in the low lying mist.  The scene made me think of a contemporary version of the Dark Tower from  JRR Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings". For me as well, I love the clean open urban space of the roof top parking lot, with just the solitary car in the distance, creating a sense of urban abandonment and emptiness.

Passing of Strangers

The fourth image from my Birmingham at night series. This photograph was taken at the Christmas Market (which had just closed) and I thought to myself to plant my camera and tripod amongst the throng of strangers, and shoot the following scene which I had in my minds eye. I like the slightly surreal, almost science fiction feel to the resulting photograph.

Sixth in my Hasting Fishing Beach series. Very pleased with some the comments people have made in response to this image, makes it all worthwhile to me, some extracts below:

"The light in your photos is always perfect ... " from Delaville

"Love that light! Fantastic items to shoot, what a collection. Wonderful clarity too, I think the sharpness adds an extra punch to an already great photo ..." from John

Fourth in my Hastings Fishing beach series. This time of the sheds where the fishing tackle and nets ect is kept. For this image, I also tried something different, inspired by my friend and fellow photographer Paul Manser was doing initially, and that was using his Canon Speedlite to illuminate a scene. For this photograph I used my LED torch which I always carry in my camera bag, to illuminate  the poster of the "Hastings Herring Festival

The third image from my Birmingham series. This was taken outside the Birmingham City Library. I don't normally go for to much in the way of altering colour in my post processing, however on this occasion a little experimenting created this almost cold purple tone which I feel compliments the misty atmosphere, and I have ended up with this almost Science Fiction feel which compliments the previous post in my Birmingham City Centre series.

Self Study

The last in my current Self Study series, think I will produce some more, as they have had a very positive reaction on iPernity, that is compared to other images I have posted, which has surprised me somewhat, then again its all about the eyes of the beholder as we know.  This version was taken in Eastbourne, and my son assisted me here, as the tripod was set up a distance from my position, so he was my trigger man on the remote.

Just Passing Through

Here is the second image from my Birmingham City centre series. This was me planting my camera and tripod in the middle of the path and shooting. I was drawn by the atmosphere, the contrast of the wooden Christmas market huts, the architecture of the war memorial and library in the back ground. It was only when I got home to process did I fully realise that the big Ferris behind the War Memorial appeared like a large moon or planet rising on the horizon, creating this surreal Sci-Fi feeling to the shot.  I am very pleased with how this image has worked out. Also needs to be noted that this image is number 2000 on my Flickr stream.

Self Study

So, here I am continuing with the self portrait theme. This was just an off the cuff idea that I liked and wanted to begin exploring without getting to technical on the get go. Someone mentioned on my Ipernity post of this image, that they thought the composition was to central, and I agreed with them to a point. However ...  sometimes I think we get too caught up in the technical aspect, and forget to just let the idea flow and see what happens  (and don't get me wrong, I am all up for getting something "just right" technically too). Someone else then backed up my viewpoint, so really its all subjective in the end and dependent on the eyes of the beholder. Someone else then  also commented as follows, and this really tickled my fancy (or should I say my ego); " Remarkable; you seem so  "intimate" there, in your "space" and yet far away too.
