California Dreaming

California Dreaming

Last in my current series of Americans Abroad. This time of an old beautifully restored 1950's Red Chevrolet Pick Up (or bakkie as we call them in South Africa). This was taken last summer in St Leonard's down a back street I decided to explore, very happy to have found this.

Safe House

Safe House

The journey continues with my Americans Abroad project (an off shoot of my Exploring the Automobile series). This car (I believe its an Oldsmobile - will stand corrected) was photographed in St Leonards. The scene made me think of an episode of the Sopranos or similar. I love scenes like this when I come across them, and in fact get quite excited, as I find it so surreal and love the sense of Americana it evokes here in the UK.

Striped Tomato

Striped Tomato

Continuing my Americans Abroad theme, this time of a replica  of the infamous Ford Gran Torino from Starsky and Hutch, which was affectionately known as the "Striped Tomato".  As a kid growing up, this was one of the cars we used to dream about, and was as much a leading character of the hit TV show as were the main stars Starsky, Hutch and Huggy Bear.

Latest photography posted on my Flickr Photo Stream Night-time view of a restored customised VW Kombi (Combi) that is local to Eastbourne. It can be tricky shooting cars at night, especially when the best angle is on the other-side of a busy rat run cut through, and you have to allow for 30 odd second exposures,  and often have the risk of a light trail running through the shot.  On this occasion the combination of low angle for the composition and the happy occurrence of a passing car across the shot led to this pleasing combination of effect, composition and subject matter.

Minas Morgul version 2

Latest photography posted on my Flickr Photo Stream

The seventh in my Birmingham night time series. For this shot, I found myself on top of a near deserted parking  garage just behind the library. It was a very atmospheric winter night, with mist and frog, I was drawn to the BT Tower in the  near distance, and loved the red lights on top with their ghostly impressions in the low lying mist.  The scene made me think of a contemporary version of the Dark Tower from  JRR Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings". For me as well, I love the clean open urban space of the roof top parking lot, with just the solitary car in the distance, creating a sense of urban abandonment and emptiness.

Photograph of a vintage motorcycle that I captured outside my local pub The Victoria Hotel last summer. You will of course forgive me for not knowing the make and model of the motorcycle, I should have paid closer attention here. Photographing motorcycles is not normally my thing, however on occasion they present themselves to my lens and it's a case of it would be rude not to photograph them. I am in the process of posting a few motorcycle shots that I have been saving up (you may have noticed the preceeding Vespa shots on my flickr stream), so please stay tuned for more over the next few days.

A quintessential Brighton scene, Vesta Scooter, Seaside attraction. Fish and Chips with Mushy peas, Bank Holiday Mondays, booze and punch ups, Mods and Rockers, a timeless vista, the past reaching forwards and the present backwards, here we are now, whats changed, not a lot probably.

Night Bug

Latest photography posted on my Flickr Photo Stream

Taken last Easter in Palma de Mallorca. I was out exploring the old town  for some night photography street scenes, when I cam across this immaculately kept beetle parked up in a small square. As you can tell by closer inspection, this is a rather tasty looking bug, especially when you look at the size of its tyre's. Body work was in perfect condition. In  this composition, I really like how the rounded shapes of the Beetle blend into the square and rectangle shapes of the buildings just out of focus in the back ground.

GM Days

Latest photography posted on my Flickr Photo Stream

Photograph of a circa 1950's British Vauxhall Velox in the foreground, and in the back ground a circa 1950's American Chevrolet Coupe. Both vehicles falling under the general Motors GM Banner these days. This was taken last year in Eastbourne, outside the Grand Hotel. The cars were part of the Magnificent Motors show held annually in May, on the Western Lawns. There is a certain  timeless essence to this photo, betrayed only by the modern parking restriction sign attached to the lamppost.

Photographs of Stuart Williams immaculately restored Reliant Scimitar and also a portrait of Stuart himself. Stuart and Keith Parrington from XJ Restorations spent a considerable amount of time and energy restoring this car to its current state, and I think the results speak for themselves.  This car looks stunning and sounds like a beast, perfect waking up the neighbors on a Sunday morning and the surrounding countryside for that matter!.

Photograph of a lovely Daimler Coupe, again taken at the XJ Restoration workshop. The bright Yellow of the car and the blue of the sea containers made for an interesting contrast in shape and form, with obvious overtures to Ikea. Please note I have a page dedicated on my website to Keith and his restoration business here.
